Many people know the 1960 Christmas film, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. It’s a beloved story, featuring a grumpy main character who hates the Christmas season, and the Whos’, the cheerful people in a little village called Whoville, who love Christmas. The story tells about coming together and being grateful for what you have, and how it can change your heart. Older classic movies are enjoyable no matter how often you watch them, and the older version of The Grinch is a great example. “This a classic cartoon that is straight to the point. I love this,” says Brandon Collins, on Medium Popcorn. Whether you have it playing in the background at a Christmas party, or sit down with your whole family to watch it, the Grinch is a great Christmas movie with a valuable lesson. But which one?
The movie starts by introducing us to the whos, cheerful, Christmas-loving villagers in a little town called Whoville. They trim trees, decorate houses, and wrap presents. But the Grinch, the antagonist, watches from his cave. The Grinch does not like the Christmas season, but please don’t ask why, no one quite knows the reason. He decides that Christmas must be stopped. He devises a plan to “steal” Christmas from Whoville, and in the night, he sneaks in and starts to deconstruct and steal the Christmas decorations, trees, and presents. But when he comes across one house, he awakens a little girl, who asks him, “Why are you taking our Christmas tree Santa?”. The Grinch, cold-hearted as he is, explains to her that the lights need to be fixed, and sends her off to bed. After taking every last decoration, tree, and present there is, he loads everything on a sleigh and prepares to send it off of Mount Krumpet, into the gorge below.
But a sound echoes across the land. At first, he thinks it is the Whos crying, but listens closer, and realizes they are still singing and celebrating! He then begins to think, and brings the sleigh back to the whos, returning their things, and their presents. They all then have a Christmas feast together, to celebrate the season and the joy that comes with it.
The Grinch is a familiar and classic Christmas movie. Although it is very simple and short, unlike the newer animated version and live action, many families and people still enjoy watching it.
